Victorian Etruscan Revival Knotted Heart Ring

Description

This Victorian ring features incredibly intricate cannetille work in a flaming heart motif - symbolism and workmanship at its finest, in buttery 15k gold.

HISTORY

A close relative of filigree and cannetille work, granulation involves minute spheres of gold which are painstakingly flash soldered onto another surface, generally of high karat gold. Popular as part of the Etruscan Revival movement of the 1850s, the technique was made famous by the Castellani family of jewelers in Italy, in an effort to mimic the motifs found in new discoveries of Ancient Greek and Etruscan jewelry.

The motif seen here, with a Hellenistic style knot atop a heart, is no doubt meant to symbolize love and fidelity and mimic ancient jewelry unearthed as part of the archaeological findings of the time. This piece was likely originally a component of a larger necklace or earring, and was converted seamlessly to a ring sometime later in the Victorian era.
