Description

This beautiful Victorian-era rose gold cigar band ring is embossed and stippled with repeating geometric patterns to enhance its faceted shape.

HISTORY

Founded in 1850, J.R. Wood & Sons was a prominent New York City based jewelry firm. Their shop on Maiden Lane in downtown Manhattan specialized in diamond cutting, accessories and the making of fine gold and platinum wedding bands. In 1919, the company merged with Lenox, Inc., and would eventually rebrand itself as the famed "Art-Carved" wedding ring company, which is still in business today.

Named cigar bands for both their generous width and the way they wrap flat around the finger, these highly decorative bands were notoriously popular in the late Victorian era, but are becoming harder to find today. Varying in quality, they ranged from paper thin to thick and substantial, as in this example.

CONDITION

Very Good - Band shows very little signs of wear, with patina of light surface scratches commensurate with age. One panel has subtle evidence of an older sizing in that it is slightly larger than the others (which would be an ideal spot to resize to the customer's needs if necessary).
